Maumee Bay State Park is a nice place to plan a road trip. Hotel accomodations on-site,
sand-like beach, camping available. Grass rigging area and large parking lot. Also,
protected sailing area that is approximately 20 acres (Great for all Novices...long and
short-board).
When the wind is South and Southwest, Maumee Bay offers the fastest flat water sailing available in Ohio. Period. Sail 10 foot off-shore in nearly flat water. It doesn't get any faster in Ohio.
West South West and West Winds will produce excellent bump-n-jump conditions, with waves seldom becoming larger than 4 foot. This is because Maumee Bay is relatively shallow (around 7-10 foot deep avarage). Waves are short in height and frequency.
Northwest, North, and Northeast produce fine bump conditions, and if you take the time to sail a few miles out to the shipping channel, huge happy rollers appear where the deep channel meets the shallow bay.
