Looking for a nice windsurfing road trip? Presque Isle is the place: It’s a long peninsula jutting into Lake Erie, offering launch sites facing several directions. This makes Presque Isle less sensitive to wind direction than other sites.

Conditions

The prime sailing location is just West of Sunset Point. This is the best place to sail when the wind is coming from any direction except the South or Southwest. When the wind is out of the South or Southwest, sail from East Pier. Novices prefer East Pier because it’s sheltered from Lake Erie’s waves.

Hazards

There’s a current that goes away from shore.

Directions

Approximately 90 miles and 1 hour 45 minutes from Cleveland’s eastern suburbs. Take I-90 East to exit 18 in Pennsylvania. Turn left onto PA 832 North. Follow 832 North into the park.

Other Info

Pennsylvania requires windsurfers to wear PFDs (life jackets). "They’re real sticklers about that up here.
