When conditions at Mentor Headlands are unmanageable, try Fairport Harbor. The breakwall runs parallel to the beach, and does a good job of minimizing the waves.
The wind is often stronger near the breakwall. If the wind is out of the Southwest, it will be "dirty" (erratic). The only clean air will be near the river channel. If the wind is coming over the breakwall, it may be dirty and much stronger near the channel opening.
(Some years) there’s a sandbar about 30’ from the breakwall -- the water’s about chest deep. It’s nice to be able to beach start after missing a jibe.
To the right of the swimming area.

Watch out for boats and freighters, especially when sailing across the river channel or inlet.
There are some submerged concrete pipes in the shallow water — about 40 yards (?) to the East of the beach.
